Mystery: Meeting the Maker

It's funny, living with a piece of ceramic ware for awhile, getting to know it. Somehow an image is formed of the maker. A latent image, but an image nonetheless. I didn't realize it so clearly until today, thinking about meeting Ben Krupka. (This at a workshop at WCC.) I have a cup of his from NCECA's cup sale last year.

Now there's this strange duality-nonduality. The person is not the pot; the pot is somehow of the person, but also very much of itself. There's a connection between the two, a very real one. Somehow they are both of the same stuff. The pot is not the person, yet the pot is the person. The person is not the pot, yet the person is the pot.

It's a Mystery - mystery with a capital M, mystery in a sacramental sense, mystery in the sense of something that is contemplated but not understood, held but not grasped.
